Other Graduation Requirements

The curriculum includes additional graduation requirements, beyond Areas of Knowledge and Modes of Inquiry, that serve the educational interests of undergraduate students:

Thirty-four course credit requirement – You must successfully complete a total of at least 34 course credits to graduate; of these at least 12 must be at or above the 100-level. There are restrictions on the number of certain types of half-credit courses, professional school courses, internships, and military science courses that count toward the degree (for more detail, see Credit Limitations).

First-year writing requirement – You must successfully complete Writing 20 in the first or second semester of enrollment. Sections of Writing 20 are offered in the fall and the spring.

First-year seminar requirement – Before beginning the third semester at Duke you must successfully complete a seminar.  Seminars are generally marked with an "S" following the course number. If you participate in the Focus Program or complete one of the seminars in the 49S-series, in which only first-year students may enroll, you will fulfill this requirement in the process. Additional seminars (including ones in the 20S-series) are available to you in the fall and spring. Any seminar for which you are qualified can be taken to fulfill this requirement.

Small group learning experiences (SGLE) requirement—In the sophomore, junior and/or senior years, you must complete two SGLEs, which include seminars, tutorials, and independent study courses.

Major, minor, and certificate requirements—Only a single major is required for graduation. The combined number of majors, minors, and certificates cannot exceed three, and no more than two majors are permitted. The specific requirements of the majors, minors, and certificate programs are defined in the departmental listing in the Bulletin of Undergraduate Instruction.
