Procedures for Requesting Academic Interventions

It make take up to one week for intervention requests and documentation to be reviewed and processed. Students are expected to make ALL submissions at least two weeks before exams so interventions can be properly arranged. Students also are expected to meet with their professors upon notification to discuss implementation of their interventions.

Students who wish to be considered for academic interventions must complete the request for services form (also available in hard copy at the reception desk of the ARC). The completed and signed form along with complete assessment documentation is then turned in to the clinical director of the ARC for evaluation. The ARC is located at:

Academic Resource Center
211 Academic Advising Center
Box 90694
Durham, NC 27708

Note: For information regarding documentation requirements at Duke University, see the links below or call the clinical director of the Academic Resource Center at (919) 684-5917.

The clinical director reviews the documentation to determine if it is appropriate and complete. If additional information or clarification is needed, the clinical director consults with the student and/or appropriate health care provider. If additional
documentation is needed it is the student’s responsibility to provide it.

Note: Students will complete a release-of-information form whenever an outside evaluation is needed with consults, assessment professionals, or other sources relevant to determining eligibility for academic interventions.

The clinical director completes a careful review of the student’s documentation to determine eligibility for academic interventions at Duke University. In addition, the clinical director will determine which interventions and other academic support services provided by the ARC will be offered to the student.

After it has been determined that a student is disabled and eligible to receive academic interventions, the clinical director prepares a list of interventions and/ or academic support services based on the documentation.

The clinical director then meets with the student to discuss the student’s impairment and recommended interventions and support services. During the meeting, the clinical director discusses with the student the interventions that have been recommended. Procedures for implementing interventions are discussed and the student is referred to the interventions coordinator. The student is also apprised that individual circumstances may warrant a modification of the interventions agreed upon and listed.

Note: If in the future, a student wishes to discuss the possibility of receiving interventions not listed on the signed Interventions, the student should make an appointment to meet with the clinical director of the Academic Resource Center. Additional documentation may be needed.

The clinical director refers the student to the interventions coordinator, who arranges interventions for each semester.

Note: Students must request interventions each semester. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule an appointment to meet with the interventions coordinator each semester in order to make arrangements for the implementation of interventions.

The clinical director of the Academic Resource Center also makes at least two follow-up appointments with each student.  He or she willdiscuss the potential impact of the student’s learning disability and/or attention deficit on his/her academic performance. This is intended to increase the student’s awareness and understanding of his/her disability and its potential impact on academic performance, especially given the student’s current course schedule. The clinical director may refer the student to a learning specialist who would work with the student on a regular basis. The student might also receive further academic support from the Academic Skills Instructional Program, Peer Tutoring Program, or other Academic Resource Center programs for ongoing learning assistance.
