Program II

Program II represents an alternative to a traditional major in a Program I department, serving the needs of students interested in developing their own unique, interdisciplinary program of study.  If you believe that your intellectual interests and talents would be better served outside the regular curriculum options available under Program I, you are encouraged to explore the option of Program II. If admitted into Program II, you will follow an individualized degree program to examine and explore a topic, question, or theme as your core area of study. As a degree candidate in Program II, you separate yourself from the requirements and options of Program I, including the requirement for a major and the options of multiple majors and minors.

You may be accepted into Program II only after your first semester at Duke; you are ineligible for admission after your fifth semester. Apart from the requirements arising from the approved program of study, a Program II student must satisfy certain general education requirements, including the need to complete 34 course credits and to demonstrate curricular breadth. For further information see the Program II Web site.

Procedure

If you are interested in Program II you should attend one of the information sessions offered during the academic year, confer with faculty and/or the director(s) of undergraduate studies in the department(s) closest to your interests and meet with Norman Keul (nkeul@duke.edu), the academic dean for Program II students. You will select a faculty advisor and, in consultation with that advisor, plan and submit a written proposal to the sponsoring department or program and to the Committee on Program II of the Arts & Sciences Council.
