Small Group Learning Experiences
Policy
Recognizing the educational value to undergraduates of taking courses with limited enrollment and ample opportunity for discussion and close collaboration with an instructor, the Faculty of Arts & Sciences many years ago instituted a series of requirements intended to insure that students have the benefit of small group learning experiences. The requirements are as follows:
A. First-Year Seminar Requirement
First-year students are required to complete a full seminar (1.0 cc) in the first year, and this requirement may not be postponed.
B. Small Group Learning Experience Requirement
After the first year (i.e., during your sophomore, junior, and/or senior years), students must complete two small group learning experiences (SGLEs). This requirement is met by two 1.0 credit courses designated as seminars, tutorials, independent studies, or theses. Transfer students who completed 3 or more semsters at the previous institution or who have had the first-year seminar requirement waived, need satisfy only the two-course Small Group Learning Experience requirement, not also the first-year seminar requirement.
